Blockades and Marches in Oaxaca, Mexico: It's Safe, But Words of Warning for Residents and Tourists

The city of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, is notorious for its annual teachers' strike and ensuing blockades and marches. Prospective tourists are concerned for their safety in the face of union activities and those of other interest groups, and thus many avoid visiting beginning around the time the strike begins. Oaxaca does remain safe despite the unrest. However, it is unwise to participate in any way in Mexico's political processes, meaning you should not walk alongside protesters or otherwise do anything which could be construed as participating in the country's politics. Authorities can expel you from the country. It's written in Mexico's constitution. It's a privilege not a right to visit Mexico. Don't do anything to jeopardize your ability to enjoy the country.
